Sailing Magazine : Knots on the Go

On May 15, 2013, in Reviews, by Administrator

Sailing Magazine includes Knots 3D as one of five recommended knot guides for mobile offline use in their “How To” blog.

There is no shortage of knot-tying applications available for handheld devices and they can be a handy guide to remind you how to tie less well-known knots. Some are geared more towards fishing or climbing, but many applications include knots that sailors will use.

Knots 3D gives excellent descriptions of knots and their usage, including some history. There are no step-by-step instructions provided, but there are some notes on knot structure that can be helpeful. Animation shows the knot being tied very quickly and then you swipe your finger to see it step by step.

New in this release:

  • Spanish Knot Name Localization
We are excited to add localized knot names in Spanish to compliment the Dutch, French, German, Italian, Korean, and Russian languages in the last release. We believe the translations to be accurate but sometimes the English name has no direct equivalent in the target language. If you think a translation is wrong, can be improved or if there is another common name or synonym for the knot, please let us know or contribute to our crowd sourced translation project at http://crowdin.net/project/knots3d. In addition to the above, other languages are partially complete, e.g. Japanese, and we hope to include them soon. The next phase of the project is to localize the category names and navigation buttons.

Got a new iPad for Christmas? You’ll be needing some apps. Here are 100 to get you started.

If you are one of the many who unwrapped an iPad this Christmas then you’ll need some apps to get the most out of it. Here’s our list of 100 to get you started, split across categories from Culture to Sport and News to Food and Drink. There are apps to suit every budget and taste. One thing’s for sure: even the biggest iPad won’t be able to hold all of these.

Want to see how to tie a lanyard hitch, an alpine butterfly or a cat’s paw? They’re among the 80 knots which tie themselves before your eyes. If it’s too fast you can slow it down. You can spin the knot to see it from all sides even while it’s being tied.

App Discovery, Knots 3D Rank

On January 11, 2013, in Knots, Reviews, by Administrator

There are some new and not so new services that use metrics other than user ratings to determine the quality of an app.  One of the most popular of these sites was called Chomp.  Chomp was acquired by Apple leading to speculation that Apple will, or may already, use Chomp algorithms in iTunes to assist with app discovery.  Chomp’s proprietary algorithm allows users to search for apps based on what apps do, not just by what they are called. Other discovery sites use varied machine learning algorithms  to evaluate a multitude of factors to come up with a final score.  We are pleased to report that on many of the popular app discovery sites, Knots 3D ranks among the top knot apps and has the highest score on many of these sites.

User Reviews and Ratings

Currently Knots 3D enjoys excellent reviews on the various app stores:

Our goal from the beginning was to make the best knot app available.  We think we have but we still have more knots and features to come!  Thanks for your support, kind words and constructive suggestions!

UPDATE (10/25/12):  Last night we pushed v2.9.7 to Google Play which resolves the issues from v2.9.5 and 2.9.6.  Knots 3D is now again available on Google Play for download and update.

ORIGINAL POST:

Last night we pushed out the v2.9.5 update to Google Play which had a bug fix and a minor UI change. Unfortunately, users who upgraded had package signing errors and were unable to update. It turns out that the process used to remove the un-needed permissions and libraries is no longer working and resulted in an invalid apk file. See extensive post and discussion regarding the CoronaSDK bundled permissions here and here.

The Google Play developer console does not allow developers to revert back to a previous version so the only way to fix the above was to release a new version of Knots 3D, v2.9.6, without removing the Corona Bundled permissions. This was released several hours after v2.9.5 last night. After receiving emails and negative reviews regarding the permissions, I have decided to pull Knots 3D completely from Google Play. I understand the concerns over privacy and do not want to alienate those users for which this is an issue. Hopefully we can again figure out how to get the apk package properly built without the default Corona permissions and return Knots 3D to the Google Play store.

Our apologies for the inconvenience and confusion.

BUG FIX SUBMITTED, PENDING APPLE REVIEW: v2.9.1 of Knots 3D was released to the iTunes store 10/9/12 with updates for iOS6 and the new 4″ display on the iPhone 5. Unfortunately it introduced a minor bug on older devices with smaller screens where the last row of the knot list is not reachable or displayed, e.g. Zeppelin Bend. This bug has been fixed and submitted to Apple. We expect it to be approved and available on or around 10/18. Thanks for your patience and understanding.

Review: I Use This App

On September 15, 2012, in General, Reviews, by Administrator

Another complimentary review, this time from I Use This App.

Knots 3D by Nynix is a reference app that teaches you how to tie over 80 different types of knots! I don’t know about you, but there’s only ONE kind of knot I know how to tie. If I had to put a name to it, I would just have to call it the “regular” knot, lol… Read More
